The GED - Hassle-free Home Education for Busy Parents

The GED® is a great solution for parents who are hesitant to home educate their teens or feel pressed for time for homeschooling, because they work full-time, yet they want an alternative to the mainstream school system.

The online GED® prep course is the answer for teens aged 16 and up.

The GED® is an American Grade 12 alternative which is recognised in South Africa and internationally. Students can take the exams as soon as they have turned 17. Although the pathways to university admission are different to those if you have a conventional matric, it is possible for students to meet the requirements for admission to certain universities with a GED®.

At Online GED Prep, we offer a self-paced online study programme to help students prepare for the GED® exams. This is the tool that makes it easy for hesitant-to-homeschool or full-time employed parents to take their children out of school and educate them at home.

It was quite a tug-of-war in our house getting my son in front of the books … Since starting with the GED, I have to tell him to take breaks.

No Lesson Planning, No Marking – just a Check-up

With Online GED Prep, parents don’t need to prepare or present lessons or spend hours reviewing or marking their child’s work. You can simply login to the student’s dashboard and at a glance you can review their daily, weekly or monthly progress. You can check their scores for lessons, quizzes and tests as well as the report that shows how many hours they’ve spent studying.

Most students take ownership of their education and are motivated to get their work done, but with the immaturity of youth there is sometimes the odd one who pretends to study, but doesn’t, so we advise all parents to check-in and view their children’s progress, at least once a week!

The course is designed for self-study, so you don’t have to teach. There are video tutorials to introduce new concepts, plus practice activities, quizzes and tests for students to assess their mastery of the skills they have learnt.

In general, most students cope on their own and discover that they can even master subjects that they previously battled with at school, now that they are free to progress at their own pace. Those who want more help can contact us to book a session with a face-to-face tutor online.

We advise that students should study for a minimum of two hours a day, up to three at the most. This means that they will also have time for other interests and valuable life experiences, preferably off-screen, such as other courses, sport, hobbies, reading, a business venture or a part-time job.

There are only four subjects and one exam for each subject. The exams can be written year round on a date that suits you at any of over 40 test centres around South Africa. It’s best to prepare for each exam and then book a test right away before continuing with the next subject.

What a wonderful opportunity! I wish I had had the courage to do it for my two older children too when they were in school! The one-on-one method of Online GED is perfect and he is enjoying learning so much!

Hassle-free Enrolment

There’s no red-tape – we don’t need reports or paperwork. To enrol, all you need to send us is the student’s name, email address and proof of payment for the course of choice. To take the tests at a later stage, candidates need a government issued form of ID that includes a photo and signature – a smart ID is the best option.

For home educated students who are age 15 or at about Grade 9 level, we offer a GED Beginners programme. This only covers Maths and English, so we recommend using other home education programmes to cover Social Studies, Science and anything else that interests your children.

The online GED® prep course is best suited for students aged 16 and older (or Grade 10 or higher). It covers all four subjects:
Maths
Science
Social Studies
Reasoning through Language Arts (English)
